Mid-Atlantic Camping Favorites

Charlottesville Area
Misty Mountain Camp Resort-in Crozet top area more rustic, bottom area full service and more like rows-there is an area in the lower level with sites backing the creek, fun for kids!
When staying here we:
*visit Afton area wineries or breweries
*go into C-ville for historic sites or to enjoy the downtown mall area for shopping and dining
*Swannanoa-Summer home of the Dooley family-Their original home is in Maymont Park in Richmond. Swannanoa is odd and in disrepair but interesting none the less, open periodically

Moorman's River
Crozet Tunnel

Hiking:
*Moorman's River http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/MoormansRiver/
*You are also very close to the entrance for Skyline Drive-part of the Nat. Park system (fee)
*Blue Ridge Parkway-no fee Humpback Mt. is a popular hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway
*The Blue Ridge Tunnel(Crozet Tunnel)-not really open, but you can hike back to it, pretty remote!! starts behind the old Afton Depot on Rt 250-winding hilly road-It is a rough trail along the current railroad tracks, then when you approach the new tunnel, the old tunnel is on a path higher up to your right.
*Crabtree Falls
Dining Favorites
Crozet-(5 minutes from campground) Crozet Pizza, Mudhouse Coffee Shop
Downtown-(about 20 minutes)-Hamiltons for lunch on the mall area (reservations recommended), Revolutionary Soup-very casual, the Whiskey Bar
800 Block of Hinton Ave. in downtown is a little dining enclave not far from the mall by car,The Local (reservations recommended), Mas (tapas), La Taza (often has bands-outdoor seating)  all are very full and most fun for outdoor dining.

KOA Charlottesville on Red Hill Road
Rafting on the James River in Scottsville
James River Brewing Company

Ocean City, MD

Frontier Town  Campground-located in West Ocean City-bayside and close to Assateague Island State and National Parks-large family campground with water park in the front and a family pool in the back. Can get very full in seaason-reservations recommended

When staying here, we:
*Swim and walk daily in Assateague Island National Park-Less expensive than the state park-We do not usually camp here, because mosquitoes can be bad and sites are primitive (no water/elec). Assateague State Park has camping as well with one loop having electricity
*Ride our bikes on the Boardwalk in OC (ok unitl 10am daily)
*Go mini-golfing and go-carting
*Eat dinner out A LOT!
*We usually go over July 4th-Great fireworks!
Dining Favorites-All with water views
Harbourside Bar and Grill-West Ocean City Commercial Fishing area-our absolute favorite
Captains Galley-Next door to Harbourside-air conditioned and best crabcakes in OC
Sneaky Pete's-Part of Hoopers by the Rt 50 bridge
Tony's Pizza-Pizza is standard NY style-but we like the rooftop deck overlooking Boardwalk
Macky's-fun for kids to wade in the bay while you wait for your food-bring a little net (and maybe a change of clothes!)
